DETERMINATION OF ASH CONTENT OF LIQUID ADMIXTURE

TEST STANDARD: IS 9103:1999, Reaffirmed 2008

OBJECTIVE: To determine the ash content which gives an indication of inorganic constituents of liquid admixture

APPARATUS: Balance of accuracy0.001gm with capacity, porcelain or silica crucible, oven or Water bath, Muffle furnace, desiccators

PROCEDURE: Take accurate weight of silica or porcelain crucible than heat it. Place about 1gm of sample accurately weighed to the nearest 0.001g in this pre-ignited crucible. Take weight of crucible lid and sample. Then place the crucible over a steam water bath or an air oven, at 90ºCto remove the liquid portion by evaporation. Then transfer the crucible with solid contents to a muffle furnace at room temperature and heat gradually so that the temperature reaches 300ºC in 1 h and 600ºC in a further 2 to 3 h period. Maintain the temperature of the furnace at 600 ± 25ºC for 16to 24 h. Remove the crucible from the furnace and place in desiccator for cooling upto 30mins. After cooling weigh the crucible plus lid and Ash to nearest 0.001g.
